Why Is Mic Placement Important?

When it comes to achieving the best possible sound quality, mic placement matters. There’s a lot more to getting good sound out of a microphone than simply standing behind it and speaking directly into it. Proper mic placement offers optimal signal to noise ratio, gain before feedback and helps you achieve the mic’s “sweet spot”.

If there is going to be background noise during your next event, using a directional microphone is your best bet. These mics work to reject sound coming from nearby allowing you to achieve proper signal to noise ratio.

It’s important to understand your microphone’s angle of rejection especially when it comes to aligning floor monitors or side fills. Keep in mind that when a sound source is closer to the microphone, the mic will put out a stronger signal. This is ideal if you want to add some depth to your vocals, but don’t over do it.

To find the “sweet spot” it’s going to take some trial and error. The best way to find the optimal sound is to literally move the mic around until it sounds best. If you’re using an omnidirectional microphone you can test the sound by covering one ear and listening to the sound with the other. For a cardioid mic, cover one ear and cup your hand behind the other and finally, for a stereo pair cup both hands behind your ears.

Write It Down

Yes, reading from a script or a piece of paper can make for a very poor presentation, but it’s still a good idea to have it with you. Not only will writing down your speech help you to memorize it, if you happen to lose your place or dry up you can refer to it quickly to get you back on track.

Start Preparing Early

You should begin prepping as soon as you find out you have a presentation coming up. Don’t leave it until the last minute because you are bound to forget something. Give yourself a realistic amount of time to prepare, you’ll be glad you did.

Set Up The Room In Advance

Have projectors to set up? Screens to display? Speakers to test? Give yourself plenty of time to set up the room. It’s also a good idea to get familiar with the room and go over your slides as if there was an audience sitting in front of you.

How To Make A Business Presentation Stand Out

If you’re not the artistic type, coming up with visual aids for your business presentation can be a nightmare. But there’s a wide range of “good” visuals, from simple posters to complex videos, that can help make your presentation stand out. After all, nobody wants to sit there and hear you speak for hours with nothing to else to look at, right?

A simple speech is a great way to deliver a message, but it won’t necessary make it stand out. Presenting information with visuals can enhance any presentation and help to keep the audience’s attention. Some of the most effective ways to incorporate visual aids include PowerPoints, flip charts and posters.


With hundreds of offerings including font, audio and images this is a great way to put together some visuals in an organized manner. There are however, a few things you should remember when creating a PowerPoint:

Having a meeting that involves brainstorming ideas? Flip charts are the perfect way to organize your co-workers’ thoughts. Make sure to use a dark marker and write big enough so somebody thats 8 feet away will have no problem reading your notes.


Believe it or not, something as simple as a poster can help the audience remember a key point. You can keep it simple by adding a few graphics and some text or go all out and have it professionally printed and laminated. Just stay away from posters that are too busy and stick with something that catches the eye.

Why Use Visual Aids?

Ditch the long paragraphs and even the bullet points – use images instead. How many times have you sat in on a presentation only to be bored to tears? Let’s face it, we’d rather look at pictures than stare at a screen full of text and that is why you need to use visual aids during your next presentation.

Once you establish clear goals, you want to accomplish them right?  Research shows that you are twice as likely to accomplish your goals by using visual aids.

According to Professor Albert Mehrabian, 55% of the information we take in is visual while only 7% is text. Believe it or not, we are 50% more likely to retain a visual message after 3 days compared to bullet points where we only remember about 10% of the message portrayed.

Remember the old adage “a picture is worth a thousand words” – the same idea holds true for presentations. Keep that in mind the next time you are preparing slides.
