Secrets To A Successful Soundcheck

Mic check one, two. Check one, two. Have you ever heard the emcee or host of an event say this into the microphone before the show or presentation starts? They are testing out the sound system to create the best listening experience for their audience. There’s a lot that goes into a soundcheck so see below for some secrets to success.

First off, you’ll want to find the audio engineer as soon as your get to the venue. It’s important to get to know him or her and ask some general questions about the PA system. Try to find out how the system changes when there is a full audience in the room, because we all know things sound different in an empty room.

After speaking with the engineer and learning a bit about the venue, you can go ahead and start testing the mics. If there will be more than one mic, one for vocals and another for music or instruments, start with the vocal mic(s) first. Keep in mind that louder doesn’t always equal better.

It starts with having the right microphone. You may not think it makes a big difference, but remember the old saying “you get what you pay for?” This is definitely the case when it comes to choosing a mic. While you might be able to get away with using an inexpensive microphone, if you compare that recording to one where a better microphone was used, you’ll be able to notice the difference.

There are two main types of microphones used for recording: omnidirectional and unidirectional. The former records sound from all directions while the latter only picks up the sound from one direction. If you want a mic that doesn’t pick up ambient noise, a unidirectional mic is your best bet.

That leads us into controlling your environment. When recording audio, you’ll want to reduce the noise around you as much as possible. While it’s very difficult to achieve complete silence, you can turn off all other machines in the room and try to keep the microphone away from any noise producers. Keep this information handy the next time you are setting up for a webcast.

Pro Tip #1 – CONFIDENCE MONITORS

The most well-rehearsed, and well-informed presentations can appear sloppy and uncoordinated if you are turning your back to the audience, leaving the microphone, and pausing to refer to slides on a screen behind you.  

Adding a confidence monitor to your layout will allow the ability to refer to your slides and notes directly in front of you, having constant access to your content without ever showing the crowd your bad side.

A panel or two of staging in a smaller venue can be crucial for turning an intimate room into a bona fide event space.

Common Projector Problems

You’ve spent endless hours practicing your speech. You put together a dynamite visual presentation, and you’re ready to “wow” your audience. It’s time to set up the projector and get everything ready for the event, when all of a sudden you experience problems with the machine. What do you do?

Nowadays, projectors are a staple in most business meetings and presentations because of their ability to accompany a speech with visual aids. While they can really enhance your event, there are a few problems you may face when operating an LCD projector. But don’t worry, it’s usually a quick fix!

Purple Dots

If you turn the machine on only to notice pink or purple dots on the screen, it means there are dust particles in the green panel. Dust particles can affect the quality of the images you are displaying, so you should clean the projector regularly to eliminate this problem.

Poor Image Quality

Are your images blurry or distorted? This can be a result of an unaligned computer resolution. Most new projectors come with an automatic alignment feature but if yours doesn’t have one, all you need to do is adjust the computer’s resolution until the images improve.

Remote Control Isn’t Working

If your remote doesn’t seem to be working, check the batteries first. If it still doesn’t work after replacing the batteries, move a bit closer to the machine. Most remote controls have a recommended distance range and you may be too far away.
